SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Schenectady man was just recently arrested after he allegedly performed lewd acts in front of children last summer.
According to police, 22-year-old Luis Vargas of Schenectady broke into two homes in June and July 2014. His actions inside the home is what has police and the community concerned.
“Performed some lewd acts inside the residence,” Schenectady Police Sgt. Matthew Dearing said. “Sometimes in a bedroom or in a common room.”
Police said he performed sexual acts near young children as some of them were asleep, and then attempted to have sexual contact with one of them.
Vargas was arrested last week and faces charges of Burglary, Sex Abuse and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Police were able to arrest Vargas because of “DNA evidence” that was left at the scene of the crime after performing sexual acts.
Sgt. Dearing said the investigation was complicated, but detectives also had help from video footage.
“There’s neighborhood surveillance cameras,” he said. “Maybe even possibly some personal surveillance cameras; home security systems. Things like that in surrounding houses, neighborhoods that needed to be checked.”
Police said the investigation is not over, yet.
“We want to make sure we cover all of our bases to make sure that if there are any other incidents out there, we are aware of them,” Sgt. Dearing said.
Vargas remains at the Schenectady County Jail.
Anyone with information regarding the incidents or thinks you or someone you know could be a victim, you are asked to call the Schenectady Police Department.
