KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Kingston police arrested two teenagers for being in possession of stolen property.
Around 12:15 a.m. Monday, the Kingston Police Department received a report of theft of lawn ornaments from a Clifton Avenue residence.
“It has value to someone,” Thierry Croizer with the Kingston Police Department said. “It’s part of their lawn. It’s part of the front of their residence; decorating their residence.”
Qumari Hylton-Jackson, 19, and an 18-year-old male were arrested around 1:10 a.m. for being in the Hutton Park pavilion after hours.
Further investigation showed that Hylton-Jackson and the 18 year old were in possession of 12 lawn ornaments. Police said they may have been part of a game – a scavenger hunt involving adults.
“I don’t know what they were planning to do with these items,” Croizer said.
The two were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree and the City Ordinance of Park Ordinance.
Police are currently in possession of the lawn ornaments. They have not been returned to their owners.
“It’s news to me. I’ve never heard about anything like this,” Clifton Avenue resident Sue Bonsteel said. “I mean, at Halloween you might expect something like that but not at this time of year.”
Bonsteel has lived on Clifton Avenue for more than 30 years. She said she’d never heard of anything like this happening, and she’s not sure what to make of it.
“People work hard for their homes to look nice, so it’s disappointing to hear that people would take it lightly,” she said.
Anyone who has had a lawn ornament taken from their yard within the past 24 hours is asked to call the Kingston Police Department at 845-331-1671 and be prepared to describe the lawn ornament when calling.
Both Hylton-Jackson and the 18 year old were processed and released on an appearance ticket for a later date.
