ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – It is the most prestigious award in medicine in the county, and it is given out each year in Albany.
The Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research went to two researchers on Friday. Dr. Karl Deisseroth of Stanford University and Dr. Xiaoliang Sunney Xie from Harvard University were awarded the $500,000 prize.
While they are working independently, they both have made strides in using modern techniques to better understand and treat mental illness.
Dr. Vincent Verdile of Albany Medical Center gave out the award.
“Both saw a need for new technology to help move the research forward and then took the next step to develop that technology researchers worldwide are using,” he said. “Their techniques, including novel imagine and gene sequencing, which are fast providing insights into previously mysterious biological functions, especially those in the brain.”
