SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A few of Schenectady’s hometown heroes were recognized on Friday.
The city unveiled its new Hometown Heroes banner program. The idea is to honor veterans and active service members from the city with signs hung from light poles.
WWII veteran, Charles Merriam, 91, was recognized by having his banner installed right before his eyes near the corner of State Street and Jay Street.
There are a total of 33 banners on display. Ten more are set to be put up by mid-June.
A map showing each banner’s location has been posted to downtown Schenectady’s website.
