Police seek additional witnesses in fatal Northway crash

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10)– Police continue to investigate Monday’s fatal motor vehicle accident on I-87.

The accident occurred just south of exit 10 in the Town of Clifton Park around 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

Police say the two vehicle accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-87 at approximately 8:36 AM and involved an 18 wheel style tractor hauling a trailer filled with crushed stone and a Volkswagon Golf.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 75-year-old Michael Cenate of Fort Ann, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagon, 48-year-old Chantale LaBelle of Laval, Quebec, suffered minor lacerations and was treated at the scene. Three others in the vehicle were uninjured and required no medical treatment.

Officials say the preliminary investigation has determined that the tractor-trailer was traveling in the left passing lane and side swiped the Volkswagon Golf which was in the center lane. The collision caused the Volkswagon to spin out, coming to rest on the right shoulder.

The tractor-trailer then struck the median side guard rail, overturned and came to rest in the center median.

Officials say they are looking to locate and speak with the driver of a blue sedan, possibly a Mazda 6, which was in the area at the time of the accident. The driver of that vehicle may be a witness as to the cause of the crash.

Additionally, anyone else who may have been in the area at that time and either saw the blue sedan or the crash itself and has not spoken with the State Police to also give them a call to be interviewed.

The State Police in Clifton Park can be reached at 518-383-8583 or at the 24 hour contact line 518-583-7000.
