Local company pushing for medical marijuana dispensary in Clifton Park

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) – An upstate New York company wants to become one of the state’s five medical marijuana growing facilities.

North County Roots is located in Plattsburgh but is including the Capital Region in their plans. The company’s executive director, Douglas Butdorf, said he wants to build four dispensaries in Clifton Park if they are chosen.

Butdorf said the area has an easy off access from the Northway and is in a central location that’s convenient for Capital Region patients. He said it could also help patients in the town’s new cancer treatment center slated to open May 4.

“There’s no doubt that Clifton Park is becoming a health care hub, if you will,” Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett said. ‘We’re very proud of that. Those are services that are close to home.”

Many residents have expressed how thrilled they would be to see that business in their community.

“I think that’s great news,” Brian Sebastian of Clifton Park said. “I know that the ones out in California are doing well, and so, why not have it here and do well here? If medical marijuana is available here, then why not grow and sell it locally?”

New York State approved five medical marijuana facilities for the state and 20 locations for patients to pick up prescriptions.

Butdorf said he will not locate North Country Roots to a place where they aren’t welcome, so they will be at the town’s meeting Monday. It’s open to the public and begins a 7 p.m.

North Country Roots will present plans and gather input from residents, and attendees will have the chance to ask questions.
