SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Mayor McCarthy and other officials will be gathering in Schenectady Monday in support of the Zombie Properties Bill.
Zombie properties are homes that have been abandoned. Unoccupied homes can turn into a problem for the city, causing an uptick in crime and vandalism.
Abandoned properties can affect neighboring areas by being a burden on the community investment and home values.
The Zombie Property Legislation would require banks and mortgage lenders to maintain vacant properties while they face foreclosure. Banks that do not comply could face fines.
The Zombie Property Bill is being reintroduced after it was not passed in 2014.
