Police make arrest after Latham bank robbery

COLONIE, N.Y. – Police have made an arrest after yesterday’s bank robbery at the TrustCo Bank at 201 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham. It was robbed at 2:18 p.m.

Michael C. Matzen, 34, was located and arrested at 2:38 a.m. today at the Scottish Inn, 1384 Central Ave. Police say he is also responsible for a bank robbery at the TD Bank at 71 Troy Road in East Greenbush on Thursday.

Matzen was arrested after police received numerous tips following media coverage, and investigations by Colonie and East Greenbush Police. $5,045 was recovered in his motel room, which is believed to have come from the TrustCo robbery.

Matzen was involved in a similar incident on July 19, 2010 at the same bank in East Greenbush, and pled guilty to Grand Larceny 3rd. He completed his prison sentence and parole for that crime in 2014.

He was arraigned this morning in Colonie Justice Court and remanded to Albany County Correctional Facility without bail. He faces Robbery 1st and Grand Larceny 3rd charges, both felonies. He will return to court March 25 for a preliminary hearing.
