SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A man has died as a result of injuries suffered from a fire at an apartment building early Tuesday morning.
The Schenectady Fire Department responded to the Summit Tower Apartments on Albany Street around 3 a.m. Tuesday. A fire was found in an apartment on the third floor.
Schenectady police said firefighters located 68-year-old Ernest Gepner inside the burning apartment. He was transported to Albany Medical Center where he later died.
The building was evacuated due to smoke conditions but was turned back over to management by 6:15 a.m., according to police. No other injuries were reported, and police said all alarm systems were functioning properly.
The cause of the fire was determined to be that Gepner was smoking in bed.
