Former Halfmoon deputy in viral video pleads guilty

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS 10) – Former Saratoga County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Glans pleaded guilty to two charges on Tuesday.

Glans was captured on cell phone video assaulting a man during a traffic stop in the summer of 2014. He was later charged with Official Misconduct and Harassment. He left the force after the video surfaced.

Glans appeared in Halfmoon Town Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to both charges. A conditional discharge was also included in the plea. He will also have to pay a $1,500 fine and was issued a one-year order of protection from Colin Fitch, the alleged victim in the video.

Lawyers on both sides spoke about the judge’s decision.

“We feel there were defenses to the official misconduct charge,” Glans’ attorney Matt Chauvin said. “Ultimately, Shawn decided he didn’t want to put his family through more media coverage and a lengthy trial and put this behind him.”

“Our position was law enforcement officer should be held to a higher standard than other citizens, but we respect the judge’s decision,” Washington County DA Brandon Rathbun said.

If Glans complies with the orders of his discharge, there will be no further legal action against him.
