Queensbury woman arrested for obtaining over $3,000 in unentitled benefits

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Police say a woman was arrested for welfare fraud after she obtained benefits that were not hers.

Police say 31-year-old Roxi Smith of Queensbury was charged Tuesday with Welfare Fraud in the Third degree, Grand Larceny in the Third degree and Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First degree relating to a Welfare fraud report from the Warren County Department of Social Services.

Officials say Smith failed to report the changes to her household to the Warren County Department of Social Services which is a requirement to maintain or continue to receive public assistance benefits.

The investigation determined that Smith had applied for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits claiming a household composition of five people. A report was then made that three people in the household had moved out of New York; however Smith continued reporting the same household composition. As a result, she obtained $3,416 in benefits that she was not entitled to.

Smith was arraigned on the charges in Queensbury Town Court and was released on her own recognizance. She was directed to reappear on a later date in March.
