HALFMOON, N.Y. (NEWS10)— Following Senator Chuck Schumer’s request, the Postal Service will begin the review process that could give Halfmoon its own zip code.
Schumer visited Halfmoon last week to help encourage the change, one the town’s residents have long been hoping for. Halfmoon is currently split between four different zip codes, leaving all of its residents who live in the surrounding towns concerned. There are 22,000 residents who call Halfmoon home, but their mailing addresses say otherwise. Officials say the confusing zip code boundaries have hurt businesses, led to confusion for visitors, and have had a negative impact on emergency responses.
In a statement released Tuesday Schumer said, “Halfmoon has been clamoring for its own zip code for over a decade and this is an excellent step forward in the push to get the town the unique identifier.”
