WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local wheelchair-bound Vietnam veteran says he was practically trapped inside his apartment by the snow earlier this week.
Sidney White, who lost both his legs to diabetes, says he was unable to make it to his medical appointments because the ramp and driveway outside his apartment was covered in layers of snow. He can barely use his walker, and prefers his electric wheelchair. When he thought he was trapped inside, help came in the form of a man in blue; Watervliet Patrolman, Lyman Conrad.
When his physical therapist has enough of the cancellations, she made a call to the fire department, and they in turn contacted the police department. Patrolman Conrad says he responded to that call on Tuesday.
Even though shoveling is not part of his job description, Patrolman Conrad didn’t think twice about grabbing a shovel and clearing a path for Sidney to catch a ride to his next appointment.
“I think there needs to be more people like that in the country,” said White.
NEWS10 reached out to White’s landlord, who said its been tough to keep up with all the heavy snowfall.
