Water main break closes road in Rensselaer

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A water main break in Rensselaer has closed down a major road way in the city.

The water main break occurred on Columbia Turnpike. Crews said it could take most of the week to make repairs.

“You got to dig out the water. Get that out of the way and fixed,” DPW Commissioner Dominic Tagliento said. “And then you got to fix the sewer pipe. That’s going to be the problem. You’re going to have to stop and fix the sewer.”

The Rensselaer Police Department is asking motorists to try and avoid Route 9 and Route 20 in all directions from the I-787 East Greenbush exit and westbound traffic on Route 9 and Route 20 towards Albany.

All lanes of traffic are closed at Aiken Avenue until further notice.

The Subway restaurant on Route 9 and 20 was open despite the break though business had been slow.

“We’ve had maybe three customers the whole day since they’ve been out there,” employee Alexandra Hard said. “And it’s been really slow. It’s been mostly just people in the neighborhood just coming back to use the bathroom because their bathroom doesn’t work.”

Lee VanPraag with William J. Keller & Sons construction said the company has been out several times to repair a break.

“I would say there’s been at least a half a dozen breaks on it that we’ve been called in to repair,” he said.

VanPraag said replacing the line would be a better option, but the city may not have the money for the construction.

“You’re looking at budget money and what the municipalities have to work with,” he said. “They don’t have the money to fix it, so they do a repair and carry on from there.”

Mayor Dan Dwyer said the break could cost $100,000 to repair.
