TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Students at Hudson Valley Community College got outside and made most of the snow on Wednesday.
The students gathered at the campus quad to show off their skills in the third annual Snow Sculpture Contest. Prizes included movie tickets to any Regal Cinema for all participants. The top three teams receiving gift certificates to the campus bookstore with values of $25, $50 and $100.
“There were a lot of great sculptures out there,” HVCC student Everett McNair said. “I was surprised.”
McNair and his two other teammates went to work around 11 a.m. knowing the 2 p.m. deadline was right around the corner. They constructed a Viking ship complete with downed tree branches for oars.
“Probably the hardest part I’d say was packing the snow correctly because it was so powdery,” McNair said. “It would fall apart. So a couple times parts fell off and we had to water them and try to make them solid and stay together, but we had fun.”
Competitor pieces ranged from a Viking head to a green android figure. In the end, though, starting the project a little early proved to pay off.
“This year’s winner is the large Viking boat right in front of you all,” Asst. Dir. Of Student Life Alfredo Balarin announced.
“The three of us – they did a lot of the artistic design, and I did a lot of the manual labor,” McNair said.
