BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The future of Maplewood Manor Nursing Home has been made clear after it was purchased by Zenith Care Health Group.
Zenith Care Health Group bought the facility on Sunday for $14.1 million. The health group said it will rehire the majority of the 300 employees, but some will not be rehired.
Despite the long and difficult process, Saratoga County said it was still able to save Maplewood Manor. County Administrator Spencer Hellwig said the county lost $13 million in 2012 and $14 million in 2013 as it could no longer afford to run the facility. That loss has continued.
“Right now, today, we’re losing $40,000 a day,” he said.
But Zenith Care Health Group will take over operations on Sunday. Around 300 employees have been sent layoff notices to remove them from the county payroll. The employee union, CSEA, released the following statement:
“Employees received a letter stating the process for reapplying for jobs. Employees are applying for positions currently and some have received offers. CSEA has been assisting employees to make certain they understand the process and their rights.”
Saratoga County will have remaining costs due to retirement benefits.
“The sale proceeds and any surplus that is left after the facility is transferred will be set aside in a reserve,” Hellwig said.
Hellwig said regardless of criticism throughout the lengthy process, the county accomplished its goal.
“Despite all the trials and tribulations related to that the residents that are there and future residents will have a place to go and get the care that they need,” he said.
Zenith said it will decrease the amount of beds by 20, so about 257 people can be cared for. The group also said it plans to make some rooms into suites and more private.
