Child victimized in Rotterdam, police investigate claims

ROTTERDAM, N.Y. – Police say a 35-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly participating in sexual conduct with a young child back in December.

Police say they received an anonymous complaint that John Crogan of Rotterdam had victimized a child. Lieutenant Mike Brown says the Rotterdam Police Department then began an investigation into the claims.

On Saturday they arrested Crogan. Police say he had sexual contact with a child less than 11-years-old.

The alleged incident happened in December and was reported to Child Protective Services on January 6th.

Lieutenant Brown says Crogan works at Apollo Heating and Cooling, and this isn’t his first arrest.

“He does have a criminal history, some driving while intoxicated, assault but nothing related to this type of crime,” said Brown.

Crogan was charged with 1st degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sent to Schenectady County Jail. Lieutenant Brown says he posted $20,000 bail. NEWS10ABC stopped at Crogan’s home in Rotterdam but there was no answer.

Lieutenant Brown says this is a reminder to parents to talk to children about this type of abuse.

“They should be talking to their children about good touch, bad touch, and monitoring who their children are with and the times that their children are alone and who they’re alone with.”

Rotterdam Police are asking parents to call them if they think their children have had any inappropriate contact with John Crogran.
