Secret Santa surprises diabetic amputee with new insulin pump

BERLIN, N.Y. – One doctor’s office saw a need and made a huge difference in a Rensselaer County woman’s life.

Barbara Shuhart of Berlin was surprised by a Secret Santa on Thursday.

She came to her doctor’s appointment at the Capital Region Diabetes and Endocrine Care Center and was given an insulin pump. The $7,000 device was donated to her after her insurance would not cover it.

Shuhart is an elderly amputee who suffers from diabetes and has spent the last 40 years giving herself shots.

“It’s really important because I was taking five needles a day. It gets a little hectic after a while because you don’t know where to place them,” she said.

She will now just need one needle every three days and the insulin will go right into her system making her life easier and more pain free–something she is very grateful for.
