COLONIE, N.Y. – A man has been arrested for shipping marijuana wrapped as Christmas presents to himself at a local hotel.
On Monday, Colonie Police were notified by the United States Postal Inspectors that a package due to be delivered to a person at the Desmond Hotel had a strong odor of marijuana coming from it.
A Colonie Police K-9 alerted to the presence of drugs in the package and a search warrant was obtained to open the package.
The package contained a total of 16 pounds and 11.55 ounces of marijuana that was divided into several smaller packages that were wrapped as Christmas presents, say police.
Colonie Police say the package originated in Colorado.
The addressee of the package did have a reservation at the Desmond Hotel and when he arrived at 9:26 p.m. and was given his package, waiting investigators from the Colonie Police Department and the US Postal Inspection Service arrested him without incident.
The man, identified as 28-year-old David Malchow, has been in the area since at least December 12 and was also registered at the Best Western Hotel on Wolf Road. A search warrant was also executed at that room, but no additional marijuana was recovered.
Malchow did have $4,200 in cash and financial records indicating deposits or money orders for an additional $5,500, say police.
The value of the marijuana is estimated at $4,000 per pound.
Malchow is charged with felony criminal possession of marijuana in the first degree.
