ALBANY, N.Y. – Hundreds of families lined up for a free turkey on Wednesday thanks to R.J. Valente Gravel.
Roddy Valente said after a year filled with family hardships, the turkeys came as a way to help families come together in time for Thanksgiving. Eight hundreds turkeys filled an empty gravel truck as crowds lined up outside the OTB Clubhouse on Central Avenue in Albany.
Many said it allowed their family to afford all of the fixings for a family meal.
More than turkeys were also given away. A friend of the Valente family heard about the giveaway and arrived with a truck filled with potatoes to add to the event.
The response from the community was one of thanks.
“It means a lot because now we can spend our money on the vegetables, potatoes and everything else,” Kenneth Koopman said. “We’re on a tight budget my son and I.”
This was the first time Valente Gravel held the giveaway. They said it was so successful, they plan on making it a tradition.
