SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A 17 year old has been arrested after he allegedly robbed a nun.
Schenectady Police were dispatched to the area of Chrisler Avenue and Vermont Avenue for a report of an elderly nun who had her purse stolen.
The nun had just left the hospital after visiting parishioners when the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Thursday. She sustained minor scratches and abrasions, according to police.
Police said 17-year-old Shawaski Kirk approached the nun from behind, knocked her to the ground and forcibly took her purse.
Several neighbors provided a detailed description of Kirk who fled the scene, and one neighbor chased Kirk towards Crane Street, police said. Responding officers chased the suspect through backyards on Van Velsen Street and located him on the roof of a garage in the area of 1064 Lakeview Ave.
Once in custody, Kirk was found to be in possession of multiple items that had been reported stolen from several vehicles in the Mont Pleasant neighborhood within the last few hours.
Kirk is being held in the Schenectady City lock-up prior to his arraignment Friday morning.
He has been charged with Robbery in the Third Degree and multiple counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Petit Larceny.
Police said Kirk was also arrested on November 17 and charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property from prior incidents. He was arraigned on those charges on November 18 and later posted bail.
