RENSSELAER, N.Y. – Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was practicing hard Thursday in preparation for their respective games on Saturday.
In his first year as head coach, Ralph Isernia led the RPI football team to a 5-5 record. Now in his second year, with 15 starters returning, Isernia said his team is more equipped to handle their tough schedule and should improve this season.
“We say that there’s no ERW guys. There’s no eat, ride, and wake up,” he said. “Okay, everyone has to do something.”
On Saturday, the Engineers will travel to Norwich to face a Cadets team they beat in Week One last season.
As for RPI’s arch nemesis, Union, the Dutchmen are coming off a down year that saw several guys fall victim to injury.
“A lot of guys know that feeling and the taste in their mouth wasn’t what really they wanted it to be when the season ended,” head coach John Audino said. “So I think a lot of guys are looking to redeem themselves. I know I am as a football coach.”
The Dutchmen’s first shot at redemption will come on Saturday as they add another chapter to their historical rivalry with the Ithaca Bombers.
