GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – There are 24 girls on the Guilderland cheerleading squad and one senior on the squad as a unique story.
Sunshine Edwards has been playing basketball for eight years but for her last year of high school, she’s decided to try something she’s always wanted to do—cheerleading.
“I’ve always been a fan of the Dutch, especially the cheerleaders. I’ve always wanted to give it a try,” said Edwards.
Inspired by cheerleading movies and competitions on television, Edwards took a leap of faith and tried out for the squad.
“I watched a lot of cheer videos on YouTube. I did a lot of stretching and practiced my jumps,” she said.
Coach Patty Palmer said that she cannot remember the last time when a senior made the squad during their first tryout, but she saw something special in Edwards.
“I saw right away she had the strength and sparkle in her eye that she wanted it,” said Palmer.
It’s only been a week of practice and Edwards says she’s bonding with the girls and picking up on the cheers and stunts.
“I can’t wait until she gets her first night Friday night game and she’s down on the track instead of sitting on the stands. I can’t wait for that night,” Edwards said.
All of the girls will be cheering at their first home game on September 12 against Columbia High School.
