ALBANY, N.Y. — The Albany Convention Center Authority announced Friday that it has reached an agreement with SMG to manage the soon-to-be-constructed Albany Capital Center.
The agreement will begin on September 1 and will run concurrently with the management agreement between SMG and Albany County for the nearby Times Union Center Arena through December 31 of 2020.
The Capital Center will provide 84,000 square feet of convention, ballroom, and meeting space with on-site parking and direct connections to the Empire State Plaza, the Egg, and the Times Union Center via an enclosed walkway.
The Capital Center will be built in the location of the Wellington Annex which is set to be imploded on Saturday. The former owner, Columbia Development, is handling Saturday’s implosion.
The Albany Convention Center Authority bought the site in July on the promise the site would be cleared.
Construction of the Capital Center is scheduled to begin fall of this year and is scheduled to open at the end of 2016.
