Man arrested following early morning shooting in Schenectady

 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Schenectady Police have arrested a man in connection to an early morning shooting.

According to police, Brian O’Malley, 35, displayed a handgun and approached a male and female in the area of Fourth Avenue and Pleasant Street. The victim and O’Malley struggled over the gun and it discharged several times, striking the victim in the hand once.  The victim was able to break free. They then fled the area and flagged down a police officer near Crane Street.  

Officers searched the area and were able to take O’Malley into custody after a short foot pursuit.

The Far Rockaway man has been charged with one count of attempted murder in the second degree, a felony, one count of resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, and one count of obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor.

Police are unsure of a motive behind the incident.  

The victim does not know O’Malley.  

The victim was treated and the injuries are not considered life threatening.
