City unveils directional signs ahead of Saratoga Opening Day

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Saratoga Springs officials unveiled quarter poles and directional signs Thursday to aide city visitors during the Saratoga racing season.

The Saratoga Race Course opens for its 146th season Friday, and city officials wanted to provide tourists some additional help as they navigate through the summer racing season.

Mayor Joanne Yepsen, members of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, the Saratoga 150 Committee and NYRA unveiled new quarter poles and directional signs on Thursday that will be placed on both sides of Broadway.

“We don’t want them to leave here without doing everything that they came here to do and learn about all the other assets and attractions that we have,” Yepsen said.

The ten quarter poles allow visitors to scan its bar code and then receive information on some of Saratoga’s most popular attractions. The signs will help point tourists toward the race track while they’re driving.

“The idea here is to get more people to Saratoga Springs and make it a positive and convenient experience for them,” Yepsen continued. “We want them to come into our city often and feel like they know their way around.”

The Saratoga 150 Committee used excess money it had from the hundreds of events it hosted in 2013 to create the poles promoting the Spa City. City visitors already found the poles and signs useful.

“I think it’s really cool,” Taylor Robles of Guilderland said. “Just put your phone right up to it, and you can go right to the site.”

Stephanie McClain was visiting Saratoga Thursday from out of the area.

“I think if you want to find information about where you are, I think they should have more of these around everywhere,” she said.

Poles were also placed at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the race course.
