East Greenbush business owner heeds boil water advisory

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – One local business owner is abiding by the East Greenbush boil water advisory despite it not being required.

Crews repaired a broken water main in North Greenbush Friday after 27 hours of work, but the towns of East Greenbush and North Greenbush and the city of Rensselaer were placed under a boil water advisory until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Hundreds of concerned residents called East Greenbush City Hall to ask if the water is safe to drink. While the boil water is only an advisory and not a ban, one business owner said she wasn’t taking any chances.

Christmas Fish owns Wrangler’s Bar and Saloon in East Greenbush. She said she heard the town was in a water boil advisory early Friday morning and instantly went to the store to figure out how to not let it affect her Friday night customers.

“In the back, absolutely they are boiling everything,” she said. “In the front of the house, they are using all of the ice we actually bought from Stewart’s.”

But according to East Greenbush Water Department Foreman Thomas Kennedy, the advisory is really just protocol from the Health Department after a 36-inch water main burst early Thursday evening.

“Their concern is that during a water main break, pressure and service is interrupted, and they are concerned if any contaminants should get into the service line,” he said.

Kennedy said a water boil ban is issued when contamination is very likely to be in the water, but an advisory is used as a safeguard until tests officially prove the water is safe.

“We’ll tell people run it, let it clear up, and if it doesn’t clear up and you are concerned, you might want to boil it,” he said. “That’s where the advisory comes in.”

Most East Greenbush businesses were treating the advisory as if it was a ban.

“I don’t want anyone to get sick from my bar, period,” Fish said.

Fish said she would continue buying ice and boiling water to make sure her customers are safe.

“We’ll keep checking, absolutely,” she said. “We’ll just get more ice in the morning. It’s not really that difficult. It’s not really that bad.”
