ALBANY, N.Y.– A Troy woman pleaded guilty to one count of Welfare Fraud on Friday.
Shanell Gardner, 35, defrauded the Albany County Department of Social Services between 2009 and 2011.
Gardner fraudulently submitted documents claiming the payment was owed for child care. During that time, Gardner was depositing the money into her own account and not paying for childcare.
Gardner also concealed income on her applications for food stamps during the same time period, illegally obtaining $3,000 in food stamp benefits. She was arrested in July of 2013 for these crimes.
After being charged for DSS welfare fraud, Gardner submitted forged employment records to Habitat for Humanity in an attempt to obtain a home she previously applied for. The documents indicated she was working and had sufficient income, which she did not.
Trial is scheduled to begin Monday, July 14.
Gardner faces three to nine years in State Prison when sentenced on September 15.
