TROY, N.Y. — Some area middle school students are fighting the summer brain drain with a healthy dose of science, technology, engineering and math –looking to the stars in a new project.

As part of the Mars Lander Challenge at RPI’s summer science camp, students have the opportunity to work with former U.S. Astronaut Bernard Harris to create spacecraft’s.

Campers will test their spacecraft’s by dropping them from different heights to mimic the impact of a landing — with the goal of keeping astronauts inside safe.

Participating students come to RPI from 30 area school districts.
