FBI investigator gives tips on keeping kids safe online

ALBANY, N.Y. – An FBI investigator has offered tips on how to keep children safe from online predators.

Investigator Charles Higgins works with the FBI Cyber Crimes task force hunting down predators who prey on minors. Higgins said it’s easy for children to fall victim with easy access to multiple devices.

“These cases have been going on like this for quite some time,” he said. “When the doors shut to their bedroom, and they’re doing what they want, it’s hard to monitor them.”

Higgins’ main piece of advice is simple: keep the computer in a main room.

“Parents should set themselves up as the administrator,” he advised.

Even on a child’s personal laptop, a parent can head to the Start Menu, go to the Control Panel, click User Account and make himself the administrator and the child a user. This way, the parent can restrict access.

Higgins said the second easiest way to restrict access is limiting a child’s internet options.

“Keywords; anything to do with porn,” he said. “[Restriction] won’t let you go to the site.”

To put limits on a computer, head to the browser, click on Tools and then Internet Options. Under the Security Tab, set the computer at High for maximum safeguards.
