LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Four local prospects have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Shaker Grad Jeff Hoffman was taken Thursday night in the first round by the Blue Jays. The Oakland A’s drafted Shenendehowa graduate Branden Cogswell with the 122nd pick. Colonie native Brian O’Keefe was later chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Siena pitcher Matt Gage got the call in the 10th round when the San Francisco Giants drafted the left handed hurler. Gage said he’s ecstatic about the pick and most likely plans to forgo his senior season and join the Giants organization because this type of opportunity is once in a lifetime.
“They’re a great organization,” he said. “They really like their drafted pitchers. They have a lot of guys that they draft and develop into MLB stars, so I can’t wait to get out there.”
Earlier Friday, two former Siena teammates signed professional contracts. Justin Brantley went to the Indians short season single “A” affiliate, and Larry Balkwill went to the Quebec Capitales of the CanAm league.
