Soldier On Benefit honors POW and MIA soldiers

ALBANY, N.Y. – An all-day Soldier On benefit was held on Saturday to raise money to build new housing for veterans.

The day began with a motorcycle ride that started at the former Ann Lee Nursing Home. Soldier On group members hope to use that site for a new housing complex to get veterans back on their feet.

Soldier On has been providing homeless veterans with safe affordable housing for the past ten years. The Albany group also includes services such as vocational educational programs for veterans returning from active duty.

A street-fest was held from noon to 6 p.m. after the motorcycle ride and included free, live music from bands like Skeeter Creek and EB Jeb.

The Solider On fundraising continued with a benefit concert as part of the Chair of Honor event, which was placed in the Times Union Center Wednesday, and will always remain empty to help people remember those soldiers who did not return home.

The concert was held at the Times Union Center and featured Charlie Daniels Band and Marshall Tucker band. Bret Michaels was originally on the bill, but had to cancel due to a medical emergency. Skeeter Creek opened the show instead.

Construction on the new veteran housing is expected to begin in April 2017.
