Albany Firefighter recruits graduate

ALBANY, N.Y. — Weeks of intense training finally paid off for firefighter recruits in Albany Friday.

Fourteen recruits graduated at the College of Saint Rose.

“That’s my baby right there,” proud mom Gloria Marshall said. “It brings tears to my eyes that he would do something [to] put himself out there for others.”

“It felt great,” recruit Brandon Marshall said. “Even when I was a kid I would see the fire trucks run by, and I wanted to be a part of that.”

Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Fire Chief Warren Abriel held the graduation ceremony for the recruits who now are moved up to probationary firefighters.

Austin Davis was one of the graduating recruits at Friday’s ceremony. He grew up with several members of his family in the department, including his dad, who was proud to pin the badge on his son.

“It’s kind of the family business,” Davis said. “As you grow up around it, it’s something you want to do as you grow older.”

But wanting it is something Davis and the rest of these new firefighters really had to work hard for. The recruits trained for 13 weeks since they were sworn in at the end of February.

And as these new graduates officially join the ranks of the Albany Fire Department, they were reminded that there is a lot of hard work and dedication ahead.

“There’ still a lot to learn, and there’s still a lot that they have to do to grow and flourish in the fire department,” Abriel said.

“Our commitment, the city of Albany’s commitment, our resident’s commitment to you is that your training will never end and you, I know, will make our city and our community very proud,” Sheehan said. “Welcome, congratulations and stay safe.”
