COEYMANS, N.Y. – Police say they have arrested a man after he allegedly stole a boat and fled from police down the Hudson River.

According to Coeymans Police, Garret Auer, 37, allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend at a local restaurant. The victim contacted police to report the incident because she had a full stay away order of protection barring him from contact with her. Auer was also on her boat and refused to leave, said police.

As authorities responded to the Coeymans Landing Marina, they approached Auer, who was still on the boat. Police say the man saw police and fled down the Hudson River on the boat, ignoring police orders to stop.

Auer was located and arrested a short time later. He was charged with criminal contempt in the first, grand larceny in the second, resisting arrest, harassment, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth. He was remanded to Albany County Jail without bail.

Coeymans Police were assisted by the Albany County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol and Coeymans Fire Dive Team.
