Rick Bennett stays with Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Fresh off a national championship, the architect behind the Union men’s hockey team is staying put.

Head coach Rick Bennett signed a two-year contract extension Thursday that will carry through the 2021-2022 season.

Since Bennett arrived in Schenectady three years ago, Union has won over 70 percent of its games. This past season, the Dutchmen won a school record of 32 games, and Bennett took home three different coach of the year honors.

Bennett said a big deciding factor was the loyalty Union showed to him following the mayor’s cup brawl and subsequent suspension. He also credited his players and coaching staff for his success.
