COLONIE, N.Y. – A local K9 officer has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to the efforts of a Massachusetts based nonprofit organization and a Maine resident.

K9 Vader of the Colonie Police Department received the protective vest from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., and a Maine resident.

In 2013, Madeleine Hamersley, 83, of Maine, a former New York Police Officer and life-long animal lover contacted Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. regarding the donation of a protective vest to the Colonie Police Department. The vest was purchased in memory of one of her family members, Milton Enfield, a Colonie resident who served with the department in the late 1940’s.

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, the Colonie Police Department will be acknowledging the efforts of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. by conducting a K9 demonstration using the vest at the 5th Annual Bark For Life of Albany-Colonie event taking place at Cook Park in the Village of Colonie starting at 10:30 a.m.

At noon, Officer Gerald Shaw and K9 Vader will meet with members of the Enfield Family as well as Sandy Marcal of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
