Sen. Schumer speaks out on crude oil

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senator Chuck Schumer wants to make sure neighborhoods are safer when it comes to trains carrying fuel or chemicals.

Schumer said the long-term solution is for the federal government to require rail carriers to upgrade or replace aging cars with more modern ones that are safe, especially if there’s a derailment.

In the short-term, he wants rail companies to provide first responders with a list of what trains are coming through their area and what is expected of them in case something goes wrong.

“You know, our firefighters these days are very advanced, and they use different type of techniques for different types of fire, so they’d use one chemical to fight an oil fire, a different chemical to fight a propane fire, a third chemical to fight a benzene fire, and if they knew what was going through their area and at what time, if God forbid there was a derailment and explosion, they’d be much better prepared to fight the fire more effectively and more quickly,” he said.

Schumer said the recent crashes are the wake up call for us to make the changes right now before something terrible happens and many lives are lost.
