ROTTERDAM, N.Y. – The Rotterdam Police Department said a tractor trailer accident occurred because of distracted driving.
Police responded to a one tractor trailer accident Thursday on the I-890 Exit 26 entrance ramp to the New York State Thruway. The driver and sole occupant sustained minor injuries.
Ryan Koehler, of Walnutport, Pa., said he was heading west on the exit ramp when he lost control of the vehicle causing the tractor trailer to overturn and slide into a guard rail. The 30-year-old said he had been talking on his cell phone when the accident occurred.
Koehler was treated at the scene and transported to Ellis Hospital. No one else was injured.
Koehler was issued three traffic summonses of Unreasonable Speed, Failure to Keep Right and Operating a Motor Vehicle While Using a Cell Phone.
The Rotterdam Police Department has been conducting a detail for enforcement against distracted driving since April 10. The detail has resulted in the issuance of 52 tickets for cell phone-related violations.
