High school state wrestling championships in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Nearly 500 wrestlers will participate in the state championships this weekend.

The tournament will take place at the Times Union Center. About 40 athletes will represent Section II.

Three Duanesburg wrestlers will be participating. Head coach Joe Bena will be in attendance at his forty-eighth and final state championship. He is retiring after this season.

Bena also suffered a stroke nine days ago.

“This is it. This is the last one,” Bena's son, John Bena,
said. “He's very excited to be here. We weren't sure he was going to make it.
But back at the hospital, they said to him, ‘What are your goals, Mr. Bena?'
and he said my personal goal is to get to the state tournament. I've got kids
wrestling there.”

Bena is the winningest wrestling coach in New York State history.
