ALBANY, N.Y. – A halon tank exploded on the State Office Campus Thursday night sending two people to the hospital.
911 dispatchers received a call for an explosion around 8 p.m. Thursday at Building 12 of the Harriman State Office Campus that houses the Department of Labor. State Police said two men were attempting to move a halon tank when the
stem fractured causing the halon to escape. Both men suffered chemical burns to
the legs, and Smith suffered a fracture to the leg. Both men were taken to Albany Medical Center.
Battalion Chief Mike Burns with the Albany Fire
Department said halon is an outdated extinguishing agent that is used in computer rooms. He said the tank being moved was obsolete and had not been used in ten years.
Burns said the incident was unique because workers have been removing similar tanks without incident.
