Legislation to allow adoptee’s to access original birth certificates proposed

MANHATTAN, N.Y. — The New York State Assembly Health Committee will hold a hearing on Friday on legislation that would allow adoptees to access their original birth certificates.

Currently, an adoptee cannot access his or her original birth certificate in New York State unless they go through a long judicial process.

The Health Committee will hear testimony on an Assembly bill which would allow an adopted person who is at least 18 to obtain a copy of his or her original birth certificate from the Department of Health.
