Police: Driver hits tow truck operator on I-87 South, doesn’t stop

ATHENS, N.Y. – State Police are investigating a hit and run involving a pedestrian on I-87 South in the Town of Athens, Greene County.

On January 23, at about 7 p.m., State Police Troop T from SP Kingston received a report of a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian. Police say the investigation revealed that a tow truck operator from Gallaghers Garage, John C. Hanzl, 21, of Palenville, stopped on the south bound shoulder at mile marker 115 just before exit 21 to assist a disabled vehicle. He was walking along the shoulder toward the disabled vehicle when he was struck. Hanzl was transported to Albany Medical Center where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle which struck Hanzl did not stop. It has been described as an older black Toyota Tundra pick-up truck, possibly 1990's, with a dented and rusted back end and a possible broken tail light.
