Colonie Police investigating alleged attempted scheme

COLONIE, N.Y. – Colonie Police say they are investigating an
attempted scheme involving two people who allegedly impersonated water
department employees.

According to authorities, two suspects knocked on the door
of a Boght Road home on Thursday morning around 10:30 a.m. and told the
homeowner they were from the water department.

Police say the residents, who
are in their 80's, allowed the suspects into their home. They say, one of the
suspects “divided and distracted” the homeowners, by taking one of them to the
basement to show them the water meter. The second homeowner was upstairs and
told to take the lid off the toilet, according to police.

The suspects allegedly asked
the homeowners for change for a $100 bill, but the residents said they did not
have it.

Police say that nothing in
the home was stolen; however, they believe the intent was to distract the
residents in order to find valuables or money.

The first suspect has been
described as a white male, in his 50's, 5'11″, 240 pounds, dark hair, wearing
dark jacket with an emblem on front. The second suspect is described as a
Hispanic male, 5'3″, `140 pounds, multicolor jacket. The vehicle was described
as a dark color SUV or Van with windows on the side.

Anyone with information about
this incident is asked to call the Colonie Police Department at 783-2744.

Colonie Police say Latham
Water Department employees only drive in a clearly marked vehicle that is white
with blue stripes and have the Town of Colonie Seal on the side. All employees
of the department also carry Town of Colonie ID cards with them at all times.
If residents would like to verify Latham Water Department employees, they can
contact their office at 783-2750.
