NY National Guard conducted 11,585 funerals in ’13

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – The New York
National Guard says its military honor guards ended up conducting 11,585
funerals for veterans of the Army and Air Force last year.

Heading into the final week of 2013,
state military officials had said they expected the honor guard teams to
perform 11,560 ceremonies by Jan. 1

Nearly 10,000 of the military
funeral services were conducted by the Army National Guard's eight regional
honor guard teams. The rest were performed by the Air Guard's six honor guard

Under federal law, any American who
has served in the armed forces and wasn't dishonorably discharged is eligible
for military funeral services.

Since being organized in 1999, the
National Guard honor guards have participated in more than 100,000 military
funerals across New York state.
