Student injured after rock smashes school bus window

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — A high school student was taken to the hospital Thursday after a rock smashed through a school bus window.

“It was a very dangerous situation, and she escaped with very minimal damage and injury to what could have been very serious,” said Sgt. Matthew Dearing with Schenectady Police.

Shortly after 4 p.m., police responded here to Norwood Avenue for damage to a school bus. When they arrived, police discovered that a rock had been thrown through the window.

Police say that window shattered, and the glass shards cut a young girl sitting on board.

“It looks like the rock went through the window breaking the glass, and then the glass caused some injury to the side of her face and her leg,” said Sgt. Dearing.

They say several young people were spotted along the road when the rock was thrown.

“It looks like a small group of teens, maybe in their early teens, and one of them through a rock at the bus if not more than one rock,” said Sgt. Dearing.

Schenectady school leaders say they are confident the person who threw the object will be identified.

“The safety of our students is always a top priority. We want every one of our students getting to and from school safely every day,” said a statement released by the Schenectady City School District.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
