ALBANY, N.Y. – Saturday is the “Global Frackdown” worldwide
day of Action against fracking and residents in the Capital Region gathered for
the day in Townsend Park.

Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a national
issue regarding the process of injecting water, sand,
and chemicals underground at high pressure to fracture the rock surrounding an
oil or gas well. This releases extra oil and gas so it is able flow into the
well.

Those opposed to fracking say
it is harmful to the environment as well as people as some of the chemicals
used are known to cause cancer.  They also
say land needs to be cleared in order to access new roads and sites for wells.

In September, Siena College
released a poll showing 45 percent of
New York voters oppose hydraulic fracturing for natural gas and 37 percent
support it.
