SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords will attend the Arms Fair held this weekend at the Saratoga City Center.
It's the first visit of its kind to New York for Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011. Giffords and her husband will be escorted by the New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to the Saratoga Springs Arms Fair for a tour this weekend, according to its host David Petronis.
“Gabby is going to come with her husband to look over our show and see what a model gun show is like in New York State and the attorney general is going to have them as guest and we are going to wonder around and show her what our operation is,” says Petronis.
Since recovering from the violent incident in Tucson, Giffords has been vocal about gun safety and stricter gun control laws. New York currently holds some of the toughest in the country –especially for gun shows.
“New York is very strict on gun shows, California may have something similar, but nothing is like what New York has,” Petronis says.
The newly passed SAFE Act, on top of Schneiderman working closely with gun show operators in New York to conduct FBI checks on scene, tag guns that come in and out of shows and notify local police so they can patrol, makes the state somewhat of a model to Giffords, according to Petronis.
“I guess we run a pretty good show. I am glad that we have the opportunity to have her here, I am proud of it to be honest with you it's a good feeling to have someone come to what you have developed and to have them think you are a model for maybe the rest of the country,” he says.
Giffords is set to arrive at around noon with her husband and the attorney general.
The Fair will be held on October 12 from 9-5 p.m. and October 13 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. General Admission is $8, $7 for Senior Citizens, children 14 and under are free with Adult.
