Tom Chapin concert held to benefit Schoharie

SCHOHARIE, N.Y. — It was a very big turnout at the Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Schoharie Friday as residents were eager to see folk singer Tom Chapin – all for a good cause.

The concert was to help the flood victims in Schoharie through SALT, the Schoharie Area Long Term recovery group, and with mentions of Schoharie valley in his lyrics, singer Tom Chapin brought a smile to many who are still in recovery mode

from the devastation left in the wake of Irene.

“Nice as people are rebuilding, to have a break from that grind,” said Peter Johnson.

Johnson's home had four feet of water inside of it after Irene hit and even though he's back in his home now, he was at the concert to help the victims still recovering by buying a ticket to the sold out show.

According to SALT, 30 percent of homeowners have still not returned to their homes. The group organized the benefit concert to draw a large crowd, and the money raised will help buy building materials for homes in need.

“Because we can get materials at low or no cost we can really leverage every dollar we can take in,” said Sarah Goodwrich, SALT coordinator.

Over 120 attended the concert, and over $2,000 was raised.
