VALATIE, N.Y. – A tanker truck has rolled over in a roundabout in the Columbia County village of Valatie, spilling 8,000 gallons of home heating oil into the roadway.
The accident happened around noon Thursday at Route 9 and Route 9H near Hannaford Plaza. Currently State Route 9H from County Route 28 to Keegan Road and State
Farm Road is closed to all traffic. It is expected to be closed for at least
the next 3-4 hours until about 9 p.m.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says a State of Emergency has been declared for a two mile area around the accident site. Residents and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
State Police are monitoring the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The Ichabod Crane School District is telling parents to expect delays in children's transportation home Thursday afternoon due to the accident. All students are safe and there is no imminent danger involving the situation.
The Superintendent of Schools is at the scene with the HAZMAT Team getting updates as they are available. All afterschool activities are cancelled including the Open House at the Middle School. The school asks that parents please not come to pick up children any earlier than you would on a normal school day.

Response has stated that the fuel that was not contained on the roadways has
entered the storm drains and is being held in a storm drainage pond. They do not feel that there is any impact to
local water supplies.
