Berkshire Humane Society over capacity, asking for public’s help

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – A local shelter beyond its capacity is getting creative with its adoption process to help nearly 200 animals find homes.

The Berkshire Humane Society is more than 50 animals over its capacity, including dogs as well as cats, and they're asking the public for help.

“This isn't a shelter problem, we don't have a shelter problem here, this is a community problem where there are more animals that adoptive homes at the moment,” said John Perreault, executive director of the group.

With more than 170 animals in need of a permanent home, the shelter has implemented a “choose your own adoption fee” policy.

“Get some adoptions flowing so we can create some space, because there's more animals and people out in the community that are in need,” he said.

Locals can adopt a dog for their own price if it's been at the humane society for over 30 days, or a cat if it's been there for over 90.

“We have many kitties over the age of seven, that have many long years to give, that would make somebody a great companion,” he said.

And although you may not be able to adopt a pet, donations are always welcome.  Alex Glover loves animals, but has too many of her own to take in anymore.  That's why her law firm donated money to help offset the funds the shelter will be losing by dropping its prices.

“The shelter relies a significant amount on adoption fees for their operating budget,” she said.
